A new eruption has started!   E-mail

Just when scientists thought the volcanic eruption on Fimmvörðuháls ridge was finished, a new one has started in the main volcano Mt. Eyjafjallajökull south of the ridge. This new eruption is thought to be directly beneath the 200m thick icecap covering the volcano's main crater.

Rivers west of the glacier have started to swell, most notebly the Markarfljót rive which has risen close to one metre above its average level. People in the immediate area are beeing transported into safety and the main highwayh, the nr.1 has been closed east of Selfoss sealing off the area. About 80 people are in Þórsmörk west of the glacier and efforts are under way to secure their transport out of the danger zone.

Stay tuned for more
